Important Note

**All samples are to be collected in the physician's office by the appropriate personnel**

Infectious

Performing Laboratory

NRLS-Microbiology

Specimen Type

Vaginal swab transported in the AFFIRM VPIII Ambient Temperature Transport System

Specimen Required

**Use only the BD Affirm VPIII Ambient Temperature Transport system or the BD Affirm VPIII sample collection set**

**Separate swabs must be collected for other tests, e.g. culture and/or other alternative testing**

1.  Using the sterile swab, obtain a sample from the posterior vaginal fomix.  Twist or roll the swab against the vaginal wall 2-3 times to ensure the entire circumfrence of the swab has touched the vaginal wall.  Swab the vaginal wall while removing the swab.

2.   Immediately place the swab into the sample collection tube.

3.  With the swab touching the BOTTOM of the transport tube, grasp the pre-scored handle of the swab, just above the top of the tube, and bend until the swab breaks.  Discard the broken handle.

4.  Place the cap over the exposed end of the swab and firmly press the cap onto the tube.  The cap will "snap" onto the tube when it is seated properly.

5. Label tube with patient name (first and last) or other unique identifier, patient hospital identification number, date and time of collection, collector initials, and test(s) being ordered.

6. Forward to the laboratory promptly at ambient temperature
