PLATELET FUNCTION

Performing Laboratory

NRLS-Core Coagulation

Specimen Type

Whole Blood

Specimen Required

Container/Tube:
Preferred: Blue Top Sodium Citrate 3.2%
Acceptable:
Specimen Volume: Full tubes

Collection Instructions:

Draw 2 full, 2.7 mL light blue-top (3.2% sodium citrate) of whole blood. Do not centrifuge

After sample collection, ensure proper mixing of anticoagulant by gently inverting the tube by hand 3 to 4 times. Venous collapse or stoppage of blood flow, use of needles <21 gauge or incorrect specimen collection techniques may cause small thrombi or hemolysis which will interfere with the test.

 It is important that the collection tube is properly filled to the fill line indicated on the tube. Under-filled tubes will result in falsely prolonged values due to dilution of plasma with anticoagulant; and therefore cannot be processed.

Specimen Minimum Volume

2 full tubes
