TEST ID PHPLT PLATELET PHERESIS

Important Note

This is a blood product for TRANSFUSION.

One unit is equivalent to 6 units of random single platelets. 

Guidleline for transfusing Platelets:

  1. Platelet count < 10,000.
  2. Platelet count < 20,000 and petechiae, coagulopathy or sepsis.
  3. Platelet count < 50,000 and invasive procedure or active bleeding.
  4. Platelet count < 100,000 and CNS surgery or intracerebral, pulmonary, opthalmic hemorrhage.
  5. Active bleeding with recent antiplatelt medications.
  6. Massive transfusion.
  7. DIC
  8. ITP with bleeding or invasive procedure.

Preferred: K2 Pink Top
Specimen Volume: 6.0 mL

 

Collection Instructions:

Draw 1 full, pink-top (K2 EDTA) tube and send to the lab. Unique Blood Bank wristband number must be on specimen submitted to the Blood Bank.  Place Blood Bank wristband on patinet's wrist.

Blood Product Information

  1. Indicate when PLATELET PHERESIS is to be transfused.
  2. Specify # of units
  3. Indicate on request form if special product preparation is needed (eg, irradiated).
  4. Appropriately labeled specimen which also includes the unique Blood Bank wristband number must be submitted to the lab.
  5. Consent for Transfusion of Blood and Blood Products, prior to transfusion.
