TEST ID PC PACKED CELLS

Important Note

This is a blood product for TRANSFUSION.

This test must also be ordered when patient has autologous units.

Guidleline for transfusing PACKED CELLS:

  1. Hemoglobin < 7 g/dl or Hematocrit < 21%.
  2. Hemoglobin < 8 g/dl or Hematocrit < 24 % for patients undergoing invasive surgical procedure and thos with pre-existing cardiovascular disease.
  3. Acute blood loss > 30% of estimated blood volume with ongoing blood loss.
  4. Tachycardia, hypotension NOT corrected by edequate volume replacement.
  5. Sickel Cell Disease
  6. Blood disorder or taking chemotherapy with fever or malaise.

Collection Instructions:

Draw 1 full, pink-top (K2 EDTA) tube and send to the lab. Unique Blood Bank wristband number must be on specimen that is submitted to the Blood Bank. Place Blood Bank wristband on patient's wrist.

Blood Product Information

  1. Indicate when Packed Cells are to be transfused.
  2. Indicate on request form if special product preparation is needed (eg, autologous units, directed units, irradiated, cmv negative, or Hgb S negative).
  3. Specify number of units needed.
  4. Appropriately labeled specimen which also includes the unique Blood Bank wristband number must be submitted to the lab. See below for specimen requirements.
  5. Consent for Transfusion of Blood and Blood Products,prior to transfusion.
