TEST ID P2Y12 PLAVIX PLATELET INHIBITION

Important Note

1. This test REQUIRES use of a 21 gauge or larger needle for collections.
2. This test is ONLY performed at the PORTER or HPX lab. Outpatients presenting (with P2Y12 orders) to any lab site other than HPX or Porter MUST be directed to report to one of these sites. Specimens must be tested within four (4) hours of collection.
3. Collection kits are available in the OPDS area of the PORTER and HPX campuses. Stock of collections kits is replenished via supply reorder templates sent bi-weekly to the supply distribution area of the main lab located at the PORTER campus.
4. The test is also known as ‘Plavix Platelet Inhibition’ and may be referred to as the ‘VerifyNow’ test by clinical staff.

NOTE: It is important to minimize the amount of time the tourniquet is applied prior to filling the tube in order to avoid activating the platelets while obtaining the sample.

Performing Laboratory

NRLS-Core Coagulation

Specimen Type

Citrated whole blood

Specimen Required

Container/Tube:
Preferred: Greiner Bio-One Vacuette 2.0 mL partial fill sample tubes (blue top with a white ring)     3.2 % Sodium Citrate tube

Specimen Volume: Tube must be filled to black arrow.  Do not over fill or under fill tube.

Collection Instructions:

  1. Collection kit containing collection instructions with 1 no additive (plain) tube and 2 Greiner Bio- One Vacuette 2.0 ml partial fill collection tubes containing 3.2% sodium citrate (BLUWHTRNG  tubes)
    • NOTE: **Always have two kits on hand before beginning collection.
    • NOTE: It is important to minimize the amount of time the tourniquet is applied prior to filling the tube in order to avoid activating the platelets while obtaining the sample.
  2. Perform the venipuncture using a 21 gauge or larger needle. The first tube collected is a no additive (plain) tube immediately followed by collection of 2 Greiner Bio-One Vacuette 2.0 mL partial fill sample tubes (blue top with a white ring). Do not under or over fill the specimen tubes.
    • *The no additive tube is a “waste tube” and must be discarded after collection is completed.
    •  *If the LA fails to collect specimen on the first try and a second venipuncture is performed a  second  “waste tube” is collected and discarded after collection is completed.
    • Contamination from EDTA will produce invalid results so it is important that any EDTA tubes collected at the same time be filled AFTER the blue-topped tube.
  3. Gently invert the citrated tube containing whole blood 5 times immediately after collection to mix the blood with the anticoagulant and prevent clotting.
  4. Samples must be kept at room temperature. Do not refrigerate, freeze or centrifuge the sample to be used for the P2Y12 Test.
    • NOTE: Do not send specimens for the P2Y12 test in the pneumatic tube system. Platelets can activate when transported in such systems producing erroneous results. All specimens  drawn for P2Y12 are hand carried to the central processing area of the lab following blood borne pathogen protocol for handling and transporting specimens.
    • Specimens cannot be driven across town for the same reason, so testing can only be performed on patients at the Porter or HealthPlex campuses.
