TEST ID MVP VAGINOSIS PANEL PCR

Important Note

Intended to aid in the diagnosis of vaginal infections in women with clinical presentation consistent with bacterial vaginosis, vulvovaginal candidiasis, or trichomoniasis.

**All samples are to be collected in the physician's office by the appropriate personnel**

Infectious

Performing Laboratory

NRLS-Microbiology

Specimen Type

Endocervical or Vaginal specimen collected with the Cepheid Xpert Swab Specimen Collection Kit

Specimen Required

**Use only the Cepheid Xpert Swab Specimen Collection Kit**

**Separate swabs must be collected for other tests, e.g. culture and/or other alternative testing**

Vaginal collection:

1.  Using the sterile swab, carefully insert the swab into the vagina about 5cm inside the opening of the vagina.  Gently rotate for 10-30 seconds, ensuring the swab douches the wall of the vagina so that moisture is absorbed by the swab.

2.  Withdraw the swab and immediately place into an uncapped Xpert Swab Transport reagent tube.

3.  Note the scoreline on the swab, carefully break the swab shaft against the side of the tube at the scoreline.  Discard the top portion of the swab shaft.

4.  Do not spill the contents of the tube.  If the contents spill, a new collection tube will be needed.

5.  Re-cap the transport tube and tighten securely.  Invert or gently shake tube to elute the material from the swab.

6.  Label tube with patient name (first and last) or other unique identifier, patient hospital identification number, date and time of collection, collector initials, and test(s) being ordered.

7. Forward to the laboratory promptly at ambient temperature

For Endocervical collection:

1.  Insert the swab into the endocervical canal.  Gently rotate the swab for 10-30 seconds in the endocervical canal.

Methodology

The Cepheid Xpert Xpress MVP assay utilizes real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for the amplification and detection of DNA from anaerobic bacteria associated with bacterial vaginosis (BV), Candida species (to include C. glabrata/kruseii), and Trichomonas vaginalis in vaginal/endocervical specimens from patients with symptoms of vaginitis/vaginosis.
