TEST ID FFP FRESH FROZEN PLASMA (FFP)

Important Note

This is a blood product for TRANSFUSION.

Guidleline for transfusing FFP:

  1. Abnormal coagulation studies and significant hemorrhage.
  2. Prophylactic use for INR > 1.5.
  3. Urgent reversal of Coumadin.
  4. TTP/HUS
  5. Angioedema
  6. Massive transfusion
  7. DIC
  8. Documented protein C or S deficiency
  9. Documented blood coagulation factor deficiency ( Factors II,V,IX,X,XI) and a suitable factor concentrate is not available.
  10. Plasma exchange

Collection Instructions:

Draw 1 full, pink-top (K2 EDTA) tube and send to the lab. Unique Blood Bank wristband number must on specimen submitted to the Blood Bank.

Blood Product Information

  1. Order when FFP is to be obtained from laboratory for transfusion.
  2. Specify number of units needed.
  3. Deterioration of clotting factors occurs after thawing. FFP is not indicated for volume replacement therapy.
  4. Appropriately labeled specimen which also includes the unique Blood Bank wristband number must be submitted to the lab. 
  5. Consent for Transfusion of Blood and Blood Products prior to transfusion.
