Collection Instructions:
Urine may contain cells exfoliated from cancers of the urinary bladder, ureter, renal pelvis, or kidney.
The following techniques will provide representative specimens of adequate volume containing well-preserved cells. Multiple specimens increase the sensitivity of the procedure.
Technique I (Collection Technique for Detection of Urinary Tract Lesions)
This technique should be utilized as a routine procedure for detection of cancer in the bladder, ureter, renal pelvis, or kidney. Avoid this technique if there is residual urine, severe vaginitis, or urethritis. In these cases use technique II.
- Hydrate patient (give 1 glass of water every 15 minutes for 2 to 3 hours) prior to testing.
- After 2 or 3 hours, have patient void and discard urine.
- One hour later, have patient void and save specimen.
- Send specimen refrigerated. Forward promptly to laboratory for fixation. In Laboratory, add 30 mL or equal volume of CytoLyt solution.
- Have patient repeat for 5 successive days.
Technique II (Collection Technique for Detection of Lower Urinary Tract Lesions When There is Residual, Etc. [for Cancer of the Bladder])
- Hydrate patient (give 1 glass of water every 15 minutes for 2 to 3 hours) prior to testing.
